Bass Lake has the unique quality of being a warm water lake (water at 80+ degrees in the summer) nestled in tall ponderosa pines and native oaks at a temperate 3400 feet elevation and large enough to support a variety of recreational water sports. Owned by Pacific Gas & Electric this 1165 acre lake is enjoyed by wake-boarders, water skiers, jet skiers, patio boats pulling Inner-tubes, canoers and kayakers using an area over 4 miles long and ½ mile wide.
Fishermen catch black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, brown trout, channel catfish, green sunfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, white catfish, and yellow perch. Surrounded by millions of acres of the Sierra National Forest there are trails for all skill levels. Take a hike up Willow Creek Trail to Angel Falls or pack a lunch and walk the Goat Mountain Trail to the summit for a 360 degree view of the lake and surrounding peaks. Perhaps you will see one of the bald eagles that make Bass Lake their home and frequently soar over the lake.
Bass Lake is designated a recreational area by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The majority of the south side of the lake is open to the public to enjoy the sandy beaches by the day on picnic grounds with barbecues, tables and rest rooms. USFS campgrounds are just an easy walk across the road with improved campsites that can be reserved up to 6 months in advance. The north shore of the lake features privately owned land with residences running the gamut from rustic cabins to luxurious lakefront estates with their own private boat docks. There are 3 privately owned businesses that rent watercraft and boat slips by the day or week plus a public boat launch if you prefer to bring your own.
