O'Neals is located on Road 211 between Madera and North Fork along Willow Creek at about 1000 feet elevation. The small population consists of cattle ranchers and gentlemen farmers who prefer parcels larger than the two acre homesites found in other areas of the county. Ponderosa Telephone is headquartered here. They serve the area from Spring Valley to Friant, Huntington Lake, Auberry, North Fork and part of Bass Lake. Ponderosa Telephone offers their customers "one stop shopping" with telephone, internet and cable services. An interesting history of Ponderosa Telephone can be found on their website. The town got its name when Charles O'Neal bought the local store in 1878 and ran a small hotel plus blacksmith shop on the Old Yosemite Road. He was also the postmaster.
